A Bit About Christian Dior
The great Christian Dior was born in Granville, on the Normandy coast in 1905. His prosperous haute bourgeois parents wanted him to become a diplomat despite his interest in art and architecture. However, they did agree to bankroll an art gallery for him, which Dior opened in 1928 in Paris with a friend.
Christian Dior stated in 1946, when he launched his fashion house, he wanted to make “an elegant woman more beautiful and a beautiful woman more elegant.” He succeeded, and in doing so the visionary designer altered the landscape of 20th century fashion. Dior’s collections definitively declared that opulence, luxury and femininity were here to stay.
Christian Dior ushered in the 'New Look', raising hemlines and creating a silhouette so feminine it took the fashion world by storm.
Under their first female Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri (2016), Dior’s designs embrace a women's empowerment by redesigning femininity to be both feminine and feminist. This trend-setting label continues to set the standard for Haute Couture around the world, with masters of the industry at the helm such as Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano, and Raf Simons.
